Chapter Nine
The day finally arrived when both sets of parents were planning to meet to finalize the wedding plans. Braxton and his parents arrived late in the afternoon because Carter had last-minute documents he needed to sign and have completed before the judge. As they got off the train, the argument Susanne Calhan had started in New York was still happening.
âThe one day I ask you to take a small caseload so we can arrive before everyone sits down to eat, and you decide you had to take a full caseload. Honestly, Carter, sometimes I feel weâre just around as ornaments to you. Your real love is the firm.â
Brax interrupted. âMother, I know youâre upset, but can we end this until we get on the train again to go back home?â
Susanne sighed. âOf course. At least I can be civil, even if your father canât.â
âIâll get the carriage at the livery,â Brax said. âIf you wait here, Iâll be right back.â
Brax took off down the street to Tealâs livery, glad to be away from the parental bickering, if only temporarily.
The old man was outside the stable door. âHey, young fella, how are you? Need a carriage?â
âYes, I do, Mr. Teal. I also have some people I want you to meet. Would you come up to the train station with me?â
âWell, sonny, Iâm not really dressed to meet anyone. Could we make it another time?â
âItâs really important, Mr. Teal.â
âWell, if itâs that important to you, sure Iâll come up.â
The two made their way up the street.
As they approached, Carter recognized the old man. He ran up to him. âRay, Ray Teal!â
The old man blinked at Carter, then recognized him, too. He broke out into a wide grin. âCarter, well bless my soul. Itâs been too many years, boy.â
âThat it has, Ray. Tell me, is the missus around? Iâd love to see her.â
The old manâs eyes got moist. âNo, son, she passed on about four years ago.â
Brax saw that even his father had a tear in his eye when he heard that.
âShe was a lovely lady,â Carter said. âI would be lost if it wasnât for her that night. She sat up and listened to me. I have so much to thank her for. I wouldnât have my son, and I wouldnât be who I am.â
Both men bowed their heads, remembering the lady theyâd both loved.
âRay.â Carter looked up. âI want you to meet the gal I went looking for.â
âYour boy tells me you found her. How I wish the missus was here. She would have loved to meet her.â
They went to the platform where Susanne was standing.
âSusanne,â Carter called. âI would like you to meet the man who helped me find you some years ago.â
Susanne looked at the old man approaching and immediately recognized a kind soul. She offered him her hand. âMay I say thank you. I know itâs been a long time coming to you, but thank you so much.â
Ray blushed. âShucks, maâam, it wasnât all that much. It
